In partnership with Story Terrace, we present Great American Families with Dr. Jeremi Suri. Like Story Terrace, we believe in creating connections to the past through the study of history and heritage and the telling of great, often lesser known, stories.

In this series, Dr. Suri will connect us with the fascinating lives of arguably the most famous, and sometimes infamous, American families. From the oil, religion, and politics of the Rockefellers to the mining, judaism, and art of the Guggenheims to the bootlegging, Irish-American politics, and presidency of the Kennedys - join us as we develop a deeper understanding of the journeys of these families. And reflect on how your own families may have navigated these unique moments in history.

In this conversation, we will examine the rise of the Rockefeller family and its role in the creation of the oil industry. John David Rockefeller became the richest man in American in the late nineteenth century, and he created the largest monopoly in the nation, with a virtual stranglehold on the national economy. He combined his wealth with a strong religious sensibility which influenced his public persona and the future activities of his sons, all of whom became major political, business, and philanthropic actors in twentieth-century America. More than any other family, the Rockefellers defined America’s emerging global and economic power in the twentieth century.

Great themes and insights

This is the professor I’d love to have taken in my college career. His themes are well founded and expressed and his knowledge of the family and its rise and political run clearly explained.

Outstanding

Jeremi Suri presented a riveting lecture on the Rockefellers. This is history in its very best form, packed with facts, well-organised yet presented with such presence and panache that I could not believe an hour had gone by so quickly. I can't recommend Dr. Suri highly enough.

Fantastic insight into a famous family and its impact on US history. Truly a "Context Conversation," this fast-moving hour with Dr. Suri was a fascinating analysis of the Rockefeller generations in context with American life at the time. History made relevant, in an engaging presentation.

Superb seminar

This was a fantastic seminar. The time flew by because I was so absorbed in Dr. Suri's presentation. He is the perfect trifecta: deeply knowledgeable, very engaging as a presenter, able to balance scholarship with larger themes and interesting stories. This seminar was worthwhile in terms of its historical dimensions and their impact to this day as it placed the history of the Rockefellers into the context of American history. The graphics were also very helpful. I have immediately signed up for another seminar with him. In my book, he is at the top of Context presenters,
