Join your local guide on a 230-mile journey through the German and Austrian alps as we wind through historical towns, past crystal clear alpine, travel up and down mountain peaks, and explore world-beating castles.

We will begin in the Ancient Roman town of Füssen next to the world-famous fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein. From there we will go to the picturesque town of Oberammergau, famous for its painted homes and its Passion Play. Then we will head south to see the Baroque splendor of the Ettal monastery before entering Garmisch Partenkirchen, Bavaria’s favorite playground. A paradise for hikers, skiers, and a perfect launchpad to see the mighty Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. After taking in the panoramic view we head south deeper into the Alps to the Tyrolian capital of Innsbruck in Austria to enjoy the many historical and cultural sites of the old town.

After Innsbruck, we will head east to the impressive alpine fortress of Kufstein before heading north to the huge lake of Chiemsee where Ludwig II built his copy of the Palace of Versailles. Afterward, we will enter the Berchtesgaden region, not only the most beautiful part of the German alps but also where Hitler’s Eagles Nest rests on the summit of a mountain. Finally, we end our tour in the musical city of Salzburg, the home of Mozart, and the filming location for the Sound of Music. Besides visiting the main sight’s we will also examine the hidden gems of the region, look at local traditions, culture, and tasty regional specialties such as wine, beer, schnapps, and dumplings.

Led by an expert on German history Thomas Mills this interactive seminar will take you through the best of the German and Austrian Alps. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of this beautiful part of the world and how to get the best out of it.

Great introduction to Bavarian Alps

Tom covered a great deal in his time. Though he could go into more depth on each place he discussed, that would be a whole different venture -- a series of lectures, not an "Introduction". This was a great way for someone not familiar with the area to begin learning about it. Tom is well organized and knowledgeable.

The Beauty of the Alps

I expected to see beautiful scenery, but didn’t. All the info is great, but instead of power point with written words, why not pictures of the magnificent scenery of the Alps narrated by guide? I like visual, live pictures. Informative.

A Tour of the Alps in Record Time

My feeling is that this presentation tried to cover too much material in a single session, especially since Mr. Mills speaks so quickly. It was often hard to catch the history, details and essence of the place being described because it was covered so fast. I would have preferred that the presentation be divided into two sessions with more attention given to each place and to the many interesting attractions that were touched on so briefly.
