The stunning beaches, the picturesque fishing villages, and the wonderful climate seem to ensure the perfect destination to spend a great time at the beautiful southern coastline of Portugal. There’s much more to the swathes of gorgeous coastline in the Algarve: this seminar will dig into the colorful past of what was considered ‘the End of the World’ up until the fifteenth century.

We’ll discuss how the Algarve was the last area conquered by the Moors; however, the Reconquista came to an end with the definitive capture in 1249. But we’ll learn how Moorish culture remained in many aspects, and this seminar will help unpack these nuances for the curious and interested eye.

We’ll discuss the mythical atmosphere surrounding Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, both of which were devoted places to the gods for thousands of years. These intriguing destinations were also the chosen spots for the celebrated explorer, Prince Henry the Navigator, to work on his obsession to push back the frontiers of the known world in the fifteenth century. With this research, he opened the phase in Portuguese history called ‘The Discoveries’.

Led by an expert in Portuguese history, Francisco Barros Marques, this seminar will introduce participants to the long and fascinating history of the Algarve from its Moorish days to the period of discoveries, to today. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will leave with a better insight into this stunning part of the Iberian Peninsula.

Francisco Barros Marques is a docent from Porto. He holds an MA in “Theater and Education” from Vigo University, Spain and a post-graduate degree in “Theory of Literature and Portuguese Literature” from Minho University, Portugal. He has taught various courses on the subject of education and has been responsible for organizing academic seminars and conferences. He enjoys his work as an interpreter and cultural guide in Portugal and is eager to show the array of delights that his city offers.

It was interesting. He was very knowledgeable. It was not quite what I was expecting. I thought it would be focused more on the tourist aspects and less on the history of area.
