Between 1704 and 1709 the Scottish privateer, Alexander Selkirk, spent more than four years by himself on a deserted island in the Pacific, after an argument with his ship’s captain had resulted in his being left behind by the rest of the crew. How did he manage to survive in such inhospitable surroundings, and did the story of his experiences ultimately find its way to Daniel Defoe?
Led by an expert on Pacific cultures, James Grant-Peterkin, this Conversation will examine the true story behind Daniel Defoe’s world-famous fictional character. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of one of the most unusual stories set in the Pacific Ocean, and one that would inspire its own unique genre of literature.
James Grant-Peterkin is a graduate of Cambridge University and is the British Honorary Consul on Easter Island. He has been studying Polynesian culture, linguistics, and archaeology for over 20 years, most of those while living on Easter Island itself, and is author of the guidebook “A Companion to Easter Island”. He has lectured extensively on Eastern Polynesia, both on cruise ships and at educational institutions worldwide.

We’ll done, great speaker & info.
Wonderful storytelling by James Grant-Peterkin about a little known but influential figure - Scotsman Selkirk. Robinson Crusoe pales with this true story. Terrifically fascinating and intriguingly told. (The speaker also references a children’s book called Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell that some may enjoy of a female Native American who was stranded on an island - another lesser known story of survival.)
Informative, concise, deeply knowledgeable about Selkirk and his times.
