During this conversation, we will retrace the history of this period to understand what prompted Akhenaten's actions. We will see how the rules of artistic representation were modified, we will visit Akhetaten, the new capital, and we will get to know Akhenaten’s family and the mysteries that still surround the historical events of this period, especially regarding the succession to the throne after the death of the pharaoh.
To break with the past, the pharaoh dictated new artistic rules for the representation of the royal family, and new architectural schemes for his capital, which also influenced subsequent periods. But his rule was not destined to last long: on his death, his name was canceled, the city was abandoned and the traditional religion restored. All this earned him the name of the heretical pharaoh, but were his actions solely due to religion? And what was the role of politics in all this?
Led by an expert on Egyptology, Dr. Jade Bajeot, this interactive seminar will provide an insight into Akhenaten’s life and his historical period to fully understand this character and debunk the myths surrounding him. Designed to inspire curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of famous Egyptian historical figures such as Akhenaton, Nefertiti, Tutankhamun, and their contemporaries.
Jade Bajeot has an MA in Egyptology, where her dissertation focus was on the ancient Egyptian fortification system. For her PhD in Archaeology she specialized in the prehistory of Egypt, in particular the unpublished data of the Italian excavations carried out in the predynastic site of Maadi (Cairo). During her PhD she spent six months in Cairo, at the French Institute of Archaeology (Ifao) where she had the opportunity to visit several archaeological sites. In 2014 she started to collaborate with the French mission that digs at Tell el-Iswid, a predynastic site located in the Nile Delta. She still works at Tell el-Iswid as a specialist in ceramic technology. She also had the opportunity to work at Tell el-Fara'in/Buto and Tell el-Samara (Nile Delta). She has published several papers on the subject and her PhD thesis has been published as a monograph.

Akhenaten is a fascinating pharaoh, an original thinker who deviated from worship and images of his time. Jade brought new light to information about him and the time period.
Another wonderful seminar with Dr. Bajeot. She makes the topic so interesting with her knowledge and photos. I don't know if I will ever get to Egypt in person but I am learning so much from Dr. Bajeot's courses
As usual Dr Bajeot gave a fascinating and informative overview of Amarna, a site not visited much by tourists in Egypt. Her slides were excellent and whetted the appetite for visiting in person.
My husband and I have been fascinated with Akhenaten ever since we saw Philip Glass’s opera by the same name. Dr. Bajeot’s lecture was a huge help in filling in the historic and archaeological gaps in our knowledge.
