Join a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as we examine the history of the Oscars©️–which were first held in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. We will discuss the Academy Awards nomination and selection process, as well as the filmmakers nominated in several top categories for work done in 2021. Of the 24 broadcast categories, we will study the highlights: acting, writing, directing, cinematography, editing, music, costume and production design, special effects, and Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Feature.
Led by Academy member and film professor Katherine Orloff, our interactive seminar will shine the spotlight on the Academy Awards behind-the-scenes operations and logistics. Designed to inspire curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the film industry’s inner workings and inspiration to follow their own dreams.
Katherine Orloff is currently an associate professor teaching film and journalism courses at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, after a career in feature film production and marketing, and a stint as a field producer at NBC News "The Today Show." She has also contributed to the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago-Sun Times and numerous newspapers across the country on rock music. She is a second-generation member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and represents East Coast publicists on the National Executive Board of the International Cinematographers Guild.
