Who are we?
Context Travel was founded in 2003 by an American expat couple in Rome on the premise that learning is the best way to travel, and that local experts are best equipped to lead that learning.
What started as a word-of-mouth, mom-and-pop tour operator, slowly grew throughout every cultural capital around the world and then continued to branch out into the digital sphere with Context Learning.

Inspiring Curious Minds
In 2020, we began bringing our experiences digital as a way to deepen connection and raise donations for our experts. Immediately, people raved that our expert-led, online learning was just as good as the tours they'd been on – and in some cases, even better.
Since then, we’ve offered hundreds of seminars and courses, inspiring many to see the majestic island of Crete, create an Italian arancini steeped in history, or travel to the past through other legendary topics.
Wonderful presentation, bery interesting and well, presented!
I suppose in this day and age, we should not be shocked that unethical capitalism funded **** Germany. Dr. Ballard’s usual superb examination of a frightening topic.
Kate does a terrific job of weaving all these American ex-pats together. It's been fascinating. The Anglo-American community in Florence was small. Lots of opportunities for these artists to meet and mingle. Getting an overview of the known and new- to- me artists has been fun.
I am a professional artist and thought I knew a lot about Mark Rothko, but wanted to be more informed before I travel to Paris to see the Landmark Rothko Exhibition. I will be leading a small tour of my own while there. Dr. Hirsh's lecture was just superb - engaging, well-organized with many aspects of Rothko's life and career that I didn't know about, with great photos I had not yet seen. Her analysis of artworks was beautiful described, in addition to his career development. I highly recommend her lecture, and look forward to attending more from her on different topics in the future.
Fascinating presentation- learned a lot
Enjoyed the presentation and learned a lot.
As usual Dr Bell presented an excellent overview on the Civil War as well as focus subjects not on a traditional syllabus
This session was loaded with new items related to the civil war that I was unaware of..
Dr. Bell’s two level approach to the war really made the elements and topics stand out and memorable.
I've loved this whole series with Dr. Bell. I didn't realize how much I didn't know! I'm sorry that we only have a few more Context talks with him.
This talk was the BEST Richard Bell yet! I loved hearing the start of the Civil War interpretid by him, this most articulate man! I am looking forward to listening to the recording and sharing it with my daughter who is a Civil War fan like her mama!
Best description of the Civil War I have yet heard.
Very interesting- excellent how many beautiful paintings were integrated into the presentation
Another excellent, informative & fascinating lecture setting in vivid context American writers in Florence; how they formed a tight knit community and used their surroundings, villas and friends as source material. Superbly illustrated and inspiring : my ‘must read’ book list has grown significantly longer!
As an American, this enhanced even more my knowledge of Florence, a city I love. I hope to read some of the literature Kate mentioned. The videos greatly added to this too.
