Join a local expert, broadcasting live from the city of Cuzco, for a Peruvian music and dance demonstration. Peruvian music is amongst the most emotive, most diverse, and most colorful music found anywhere in the world. It is a fusion of sounds from the country’s Andean, Spanish, and African roots. The pan flute is the most well-known, but there are many more traditional and unique instruments that participants will be introduced to during our time together. Have you ever played a Donkey Jawbone?

During this interactive performance, participants will learn more about the traditional music and dance from Peru: its roots, type of lyrics, distinctive instruments, as well as costumes. Our expert will be joined by a local Peruvian band with musicians from different parts of the country representing the unique styles and sounds from their respective regions. They will perform for us accompanied by traditional Peruvian folk dancers in colorful costumes made from traditional fabrics.

A typical and popular genre of music and dance in Peru since the 1960s is the Chicha or Peruvian Cumbia; it's a fusion of uplifting Andean melodies, electric guitars using the wah-wah pedal, and charming percussion. The dancers will showcase some of the most traditional dances including Peru’s national dance, the Marinera Peruana. The Marinera originated from the traditional dances of the African immigrants in the 16th century and has since evolved with a blend of Spanish, Andean, and Gypsy influences.

Led by a professional guide with over 20 years of experience and a degree in tourism, Michael Lazo Gamarra, this interactive Conversation will explore traditional Peruvian music and dance through discussion and live performance. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the unique style and history of the vibrant music and dances from Peru. Feel free to dance along from home!
