Join Alessandra, a Florentine art historian, on an in-depth walk in the Uffizi Gallery as she discusses one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. Primavera and the Birth of Venus in the Uffizi Gallery are but two of the incredible masterpieces created by Sandro Botticelli in the second half of the 1400s. These two artworks will be the focus of today's conversation.

Sandro Botticelli’s career was shaped by his encounters with the Medici family and influenced by the cultural interests of Lorenzo the Medici and of the members of the Neoplatonic academy. Looking at the constantly-evolving political situation following the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent in Florence, the rise of social divisions and the growing influence of a Dominican preacher, Gerolamo Savonarola, we will consider the influence of these events on the Florentine art scene of the 1490s and we will look into the impact of the bonfires of the vanities on the work of Sandro Botticelli and other artists of his generation.

Join art historian, Alessandra Becucci in this interactive seminar about the art, the politics, and the culture of Florence at the closing of the 15th century, to gain a clearer understanding of how the historical context influenced the artist’s life and work. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, this should set any curious traveler in good stead for an eventual visit to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

This conversation is part of a series. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Volume 2 was as wonderful as Volume 1!
Alessandra Becucci did a wonderful job of expanding on artists and paintings I would have said were familiar. I now know I knew little!

Next best thing to being there with a docent

She picked out the best of the best and gave a wonderful context for each

Intensive Look at Sandro Botticelli

This session was focused intensely on the life, works, and importance of the early Renaissance painter, Botticelli. It covered how he became linked to the Medicis (patrons) and his evolution as a painter. His early works were included but the "in depth" part of the session's title was interpretation of the main works in the Uffizi, Primavera and Birth of Venus. These were very informative and complemented what I learned in others' educational sessions recently -- so reinforced my learning. Interspersed were mentionings of other masterpieces to add to the contributions of Botticelli to Renaissance art. Perhaps the title could include that the main in-depth focus of this particular session (designated as Volume 2) is regarding Botticelli so one doesn't think it covers other artists. (It is acknowledged that the description does state this but one may not know unless reading that before booking.)
