Before You Go: Pompeii and the Naples Archaeological Museum with Fiorella Squillante
Context's Before You Go online seminars are designed for travelers looking to enhance their in-person experiences at famous landmark destinations in cities around the world.
Join this seminar as we journey into one of the world's most popular, and most important archaeological sites. Pompeii is one of the few places in the world where ancient civilization reveals itself so vividly. Away from the crowds, we have designed this virtual learning experience to complement the Context Pompeii Full Day Excursion.
During our virtual walk through the ruins, we will travel along the main streets and the narrow alleyways of this astonishing site which was buried by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. Together we will explore some of the houses, shops, and civic buildings which clearly demonstrate the everyday life in this lively town built between the volcano and the sea. With the luxury of exploring Pompeii without the millions of visitors walking the basalt streets of this UNESCO site every day, we will notice the similarities between life in ancient Pompeii and modern-day life.
Art, architecture, food, and local customs will be the cornerstones of this virtual experience. We'll provide answers to frequently asked questions as well as leave time for participants to ask their own as the discussion progresses. We will learn about the excavations beginning in the 18th century in addition to those being done today, illustrating perfectly preserved artifacts and the remains of the victims of the devastating eruption.
From Pompeii, we’ll travel north into Naples to virtually visit the extraordinary Archaeological Museum, an elegant building displaying those hidden gems buried in volcanic debris for centuries. Here the lively culture and opulence of Pompeii and its suburban villas will be revealed through the frescoes, mosaics, and objects of sophisticated interior design exhibited in the rooms and halls of the museum.
Led by a Naples guide, this conversation will provide a foundation upon which to build a future trip to Naples Archaeological Museum and Pompeii Archaeological Site.
