Together we'll explore the largest Palace in Florence, home to the Medici family, the Lorena dynasty, and the kings of Italy and nowadays conserving the masterpieces of Raffaello, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rubens, Van Dyck, and more. Join the conversation to explore this amazing palace and learn how Florentine history unfolded in its apartments and in the magnificent Boboli gardens.

Palazzo Pitti was built in the 1450s by the Pitti family, wealthy Florentine bankers, and later bought in 1549 by Eleonora de Toledo, first Duchess of Florence. We'll learn how Eleonora and Duke Cosimo I Medici renovated a city palace into a grandiose mansion surrounded by the largest garden in Florence.

After the last Medici died without an heir in 1737, the Pitti palace became house to the new ruling dynasty, the Lorraine. Following the unification of Italy in 1861, Florence became the temporary capital of the new Kingdom of Italy and the palace became the residence of the Savoy royal couple.

We will provide a close look at the artistic treasures conserved in the Palatine gallery on the first floor of the palace, including one of the richest collections of Raffaello’s masterpieces, Pontormo, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rubens, Van Dyck, Antonio Canova.

Led by Florentine art historian Alessandra Becucci, this conversation will introduce you to the history of one of the most beautiful palaces in Florence, at the center of the Oltrarno, the characteristic quarter of the city south of the river Arno.

Born and raised in Florence, Alessandra has a degree in art history from the University of Florence with a specialization in seventeenth-century painting. She obtained an MRes from the European University Institute in Florence, where she defended her Ph.D in history, focusing on the patronage of Tuscan nobility in Europe during the seventeenth century. She has been teaching art history and Italian for several years in various schools and institutions in Florence.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
