Since the Early Iron Age, Rome’s Capitoline Hill has developed cultural, civic, and artistic enhancements through its many transformations. From an ancient gravesite to the seat of the most important temple of Rome (Jupiter) to the political center in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, this hill has played many roles. This rich history is now showcased in the Capitoline Museums’ collections of antiquities. This conversation will explore the museum’s historic location, the building(s) and the collection as we learn all about the importance of this site with a local Ancient Roman expert.

The Piazza del Campidoglio, refurbished by Michelangelo in the mid-sixteenth century, is flanked by two palaces, Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo, now the seat of the Capitoline Museums. A third building, Palazzo Senatorio, although not part of the museums, is still crucial in creating the piazza’s symmetrical elegance. We’ll learn about the Palazzo dei Conservatori, its construction in the mid-fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for Rome’s magistrates, and its evolution until today. In 1471, it became the first museum in the world when Pope Sixtus IV donated a few bronze Roman statues to be displayed under the portico of the Palazzo and enjoyed by the We’ll discuss that thanks to donations and acquisitions, the Capitoline collection grew up in size: first displayed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori until the collection outgrew its space in the eighteenth century.

We’ll note the architecture and decoration of these stunning historical buildings. Each are laden with magnificent frescoes, ornaments, and a breathtaking collection of absolute masterpieces of Roman art. We’ll have the chance to see great bronze statues, portraits, and lavish decorations from ancient Roman residences.

Led by an expert on ancient Roman topography, Livia Galante, this interactive seminar will focus on the Capitoline Hill and Capitoline Museums. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased comprehension of the history of the city as well as ancient Roman art.

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Roma Tre. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. As a native Roman, Livia is very enthusiastic about sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.
