Ever since ancient times, travelers and scholars from around the world have been intrigued by the mysteries of Egypt, mesmerized by its strange animal-headed gods, in awe of its mighty rulers, its pyramids, and its temples. Today, thanks to centuries of study and more recent developments in modern archaeology, we now have a clearer picture of life (and death) in the land of the pharaohs. Many questions, however, still remain unanswered.
Focusing on key exhibits in the British Museum's galleries, this conversation will cover subjects including Egyptian royalty, religion, and burial. It will also explore the nineteenth-century European 'rediscovery' of ancient Egypt and the translation of its cryptic hieroglyphics, revealing how the numerous artifacts now on display in London came to be there and discussing what their modern story tells us about our own attitudes towards the ancient past.
Covering over four thousand years of dramatic history, the huge collection of Egyptian artifacts now held in the British Museum is widely recognized as the best of its kind outside of Egypt. From the world-famous Rosetta Stone to huge carved sculptures of kings and gods, from macabre mummies to an elegant bronze cat, these Egyptian objects both large and small allow us a fascinating glimpse into the world of this enigmatic ancient civilization.
Led by art historian, antique expert, and Ph.D. scholar on the ancient world, Alan Montgomery, this interactive discussion will delve into the collecting world. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of this intriguing subject.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Fabulous Ancient Egypt

A great pleasure to visit the British Museum with an scholar who brilliantly communicates his fascination with the ancient
Egyptian culture and history. He made me dream about going
to London to go the British Museum.

Great preview before traveling to Egypt.

It was definitely a highlights tour. He picked good objects out of the thousand on the museum. I truly think I now understand the Rosetta Stone. It was a good beginning to spend more time on Egypt.

It is a fun way to preview the items of interest at the museum, whether or not you eventually travel there to see it in person. I have been to the British Museum and always get overwhelmed by the crowds and the many pieces on display. It was wonderful to be refreshed on Egyptian history and "Egypto-mania" and then see the pieces at the museum and the stories behind their creation, purpose and later discovery. Plus, I live in Kentucky and my 16 year old niece lives in California. I bought two tickets, sent her the link and it was a great experience to for us to share and discuss later!
