The aim of this seminar is to investigate the architectural panorama in one of the most suggestive and peaceful archipelagos set in the middle of the Marmara Sea, few kilometers far from the chaotic and frenzied life of Istanbul. In its past, the islands were mostly used for monastic retreat and political exile, while today they became a tourist destination for foreigners and a summer migration destination of Istanbul’s bourgeoisie.
The four main islands of the archipelago, Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada, present a unique and colorful architectural environment belonging to the multi-ethnic and multi-religious world which especially characterized the late Ottoman Empire. In the silence of its pedestrian streets and its paths where access to private vehicles is not allowed, with its fantastic villas and palaces - which show the "whims" of its ancient inhabitants - mixed with the austerity of the solitary monastic complexes in the top of the hills or the humble dwellings of fishermen and local farmers positioned along the coast shores or in the few cultivated plots, the architectural panorama captures the eyes and the spirit of the visitors, who love to stroll aimlessly in this Lost Paradise.

Led by an expert on Ottoman Architecture, Travelogues to Orient and Genoese Heritage in Galata and Pera, Luca Orlandi, this interactive seminar will present the fascinating architecture in the Princes’ islands, . Crafted to give precise details and to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased and deep knowledge of architectural masters in one of the most intriguing and charming city of the world.
