Basque Country is an intriguing and distinctive corner of Spain. From its green Atlantic coast to the mountainous interior it has a wealth of sights and an abundance of cultural interest to offer the visitor. Our conversation will lead travelers from the heart of San Sebastian, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, to the glowing titanium exterior of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

En route, we will have a glimpse of ancient churches, the Basque Country’s industrial heritage, and a look at this little nation’s varied landscape. We will also have time for a little culinary tourism, with some discussion of one of the world’s great cuisines along the way. We will visit the birthplace of St Ignatius of Loyola, the seemingly inaccessible island chapel of San Juan de Gastelugatxe, the little fishing town of Getaria, and a UNESCO World Heritage site: the world’s first transporter bridge, near Bilbao. We will also take a stroll through the historical streets of Vitoria’s old quarter before visiting Laguardia in the Basque Country’s wine-making south.

Led by an expert on the Basque Country, David Hosking, this Conversation will transport viewers into the heart of Spain. Designed to inspire curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the Basque Country–its history, cuisine, and unique culture.

For travelers interested in experiencing the beauty of Spain in person, we invite you to explore our available private tours.

For those more comfortable with virtual travel, skip the jetlag and join our upcoming conversations about Spain and Portugal.

David, originally from Scotland, has been living and guiding in Bilbao and northern Spain for many years. David is a published art historian, professional art educator and translator (he translated into English one of the standard guides to the architecture of Bilbao). He has a particular interest in the way the architecture of a city can tell its story, and has a passion for this endlessly curious part of the world.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

I would love to spend more time in the Basque country now!

David was a great guide, well prepared, well presented and enthusiastic about the beauties of the region! Northern Spain is in my bucket list and this presentation helped me understand it's beauty!

From St. Ignatius to Frank Gehry

A well-crafted seminar presenting 10 different excursions (plus practical transportation information and a hat tip to the local wine). Prof. Hosking lives in The Basque Country and marries a professional love of art and architecture with a solid knowledge of place.

Basque Country Top 10 Highlights

If I had no previous knowledge of the Basque Country I would never visit it! We were taken to 10 towns and given a dreary look at what I can only call poor architectural structures. A Transporter Bridge ( 5 minutes with examples from the rest of the world), a new chapel on the top of a hill, the single tall building in a town. The Bilbao museum was external only with a description of the industrial site it used to be. The discussion on Rioja was inaccurate and the pleas for places to eat in the famous gastronomic area largely ignored.
Altogether the only apalling talk I’ve had on context
