Rome's Pompeii: Ostia Antica Archaeological Site with Livia Galante
We will discuss the three main stages of the development of this settlement. Starting with its foundations as a military garrison protecting the salts pans at the mouth of the Tiber river, to the warehouse of Rome, and lastly into a residential area for the luxury summer estates of the Patricians. We'll use these stages to help understand the changes that occurred in Roman society through the centuries.
Led by archaeologist Livia Galante, this interactive seminar will unpick the narrative of this fascinating ancient space. Designed to inform and inspire, we will emerge with increased knowledge and understanding of Ostia Antica–thanks to Livia's archaeological experience working on this site.

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Roma Tre. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. As a native Roman, Livia is very enthusiastic about sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.

Livia related a fascinating overview of this abandoned harbor city of ancient Rome. Throughout the session, she held my interest with all the background information (its founding, development, culture, purpose), the lay-out of the avenues and roads, and information about the necropolis. The elaboration about possible daily life (housing, theater, baths, "take-away" eateries, latrines) for rich and commoners at the end was fascinating! As with all of Livia's past sessions that I have enrolled in, I was not disappointed. A most wonderful presentation about this archeological site delivered with her stimulating style for her zoom viewers!
