Recently celebrating its one-thousandth anniversary, Malestroit in Brittany is one of the oldest and prettiest villages in north-western France. Sitting on the banks of the river Oust, its winding streets and medieval alleyways are lined with striking buildings, including a nunnery, a grand medieval church, and half-timbered houses covered in strange carvings. But more than just an outdoor museum, the village is also a bustling community that has adapted and evolved over the centuries to suit the needs of its modern inhabitants.

Presented by Dr. Alan Montgomery, who has owned a second home in the village for over a decade, this seminar will lead us around the streets and squares of Malestroit, France, taking in the heritage and the stunning views, but also discussing daily life in this wonderfully atmospheric place. From the popular weekly market to the all-important bakery, from the mayor’s office to the restaurants offering local cuisine, this lecture will provide a real insider’s guide to life in a historic French village. We will even take a peek inside one of the village’s medieval houses to see some of its fascinating original features.

Led by a historian who divides his time between London and Brittany, this interactive seminar will explore Malestroit’s most interesting spots, featuring its famous place and its best-kept secrets. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an insight into this magical corner of rural France.

For travelers interested in experiencing the charms of the French countryside in person, we invite you to explore our available private tours.

In addition to his work for Context Travel, Alan also writes catalog essays on Contemporary Art for a leading auctioneer. Elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2017, his first book, entitled 'Classical Caledonia', was published by Edinburgh University Press in August 2020.
