Discover Ireland’s route “The Wild Atlantic Way”, where 1,600 miles of spectacular coastline await; from ancient hieroglyphic standing stones to iconic Victorian castles, from majestic cliffs to isolated remote sandy beaches. Our journey along the wild and rugged landscape embraces the power of nature and its influence on an island and its people.
With Jennifer Carbery as our guide—an expert on the anthropology, history, and archeology of the Emerald Isle—we’ll journey along these roads to experience some of the signature discovery points and amazing landmarks, history, music, and stories in this incredible region. Engage with a rich landscape that inspires and influences a nation’s culture, music, traditions, language, and lore. The clash of the ocean against the rocky green headlands inspires awe in those who live here. Our route embraces both the landscape and its history, a people and its produce, their language, and its hidden culture. Our senses will be enlivened by the music and its makers, savored by its food and its flavors, overwhelmed by nature’s powerful elements, and soothed by its stories and lore.
1,600 miles of open road and exploration which will ensure that you visit not just once virtually but hopefully in person, time and time again. As we travel up the western coast from County Cork to County Donegal, we’ll look at the geography, landscape, people, produce, stories, music, and song of the island, and begin to answer questions such as:
  • How the land and its form influence the way of life of a people
  • Why the question of weather is the hottest topic on the island
  • How the people of the west make their mark on such a hostile landscape in constructing forts, castles, tombs, memorials, and Jennifer’s personal favorite, Lighthouses
  • How the ocean impacts everyday lives, stories, culture, and history
  • What sustains the people and what they produce
  • Oysters, mussels, crayfish, salmon, mackerel and trout, samphire. stout, ale, cider and Whiskey, from Dairy, beef, goat and sheep farming, the fabrics of wool, lace and tweeds, instruments of music and sailboats for the high seas…

We offer this journey in two formats - three 90-minute or two 2¼-hour lecture (worry not, we make sure to have a break in that time). Both formats cover the same destinations in the same overall amount of time. 
Lecture 1. The Southern Counties: Lakes, Lighthouses, Liquid Fire, and Literary Monks
Embrace the beauty of the Lakes of Killarney. Learn what Jedi Knights and 7th century Irish Monks have in common. Find out who gets to taste the angel’s share of Ireland's finest whiskey, 'Midleton Rare.’ Discover the location of Charlie Chaplin's favorite holiday spot, or how they built a 150-year-old lighthouse on a rock in the middle of the ocean. This lecture will focus on the regions of Cork, Kerry, and Limerick.
Lecture 2. The Midriff: Culture, Cliffs, Lunar Patterns in Stone, and Oysters
Delve deep into why ancient warriors abandoned their swords to the bottom of a lake. Soar to the heights of the Atlantic Puffins’ nesting ground along an area of outstanding beauty—the Cliffs of Moher. Tap into our native tongue, not for kissing, but to understand the beautiful Gaelic language and how it was saved due to our remote rugged landscape. This lecture will focus on the regions of Limerick, Clare, and Galway.
Lecture 3. The Far North: The Sea, Selkies, and Shipwrecks
Check out the remote landing spot of the first transatlantic flight way back in 1919. Discover a Pirate Queen called Grainne the Bald and her last stance at Hen’s castle. Follow in the footsteps of those barefoot and biblical as they ascend Croagh Patrick (St Patrick’s Hill), or listen to the legends in the stones. This lecture will focus on the regions of Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal.

Jennifer works with historical research around Ireland's complex history. She studied Anthropology and History as a mature student and upon completion she worked in Archaeology; digging the land for treasure. She has her own business providing research and content for historic sites, events, and radio. She teaches, assesses, and trains students, guides, and learners in history. She has written several apps for tours within Ireland.

This is a three-part journey series held on consecutive days and hosted on Zoom. Please check the schedule for the specific dates and times for each lecture.
How long are the lectures?
Each lecture is 60 minutes long with time for Q&A.
How much is the journey?
$105 for three 6-minute or two 2 ¼ hour lectures.
Is a recording available?
Yes. All registered participants will be sent a recording within 24 hours of each session's conclusion. The recordings are available to re-watch at leisure until 30 days after the course's conclusion.

Jennifer offers up so much information which is wonderful. I did a VBT walking tour of The Ring of Kerry area and fell in love with Ireland. I am enjoying learning more about the area I walked in. Will definitely explore more of The Wild Atlantic Way in the future.
