Context's online seminars are designed for travelers looking to enhance their in-person experiences at famous landmark destinations in cities around the world.

The Dorsoduro district of Venice is not only one of the most picturesque corners of Venice, but it is particularly rich in art and historic monuments. It is here that we find the Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice’s premier art museum, which showcases the most extensive collection of Venetian paintings in the world, including pieces by Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto to name a few of the major artists represented.

The parish church of San Sebastiano is the burial place of another of Venice’s major artistic figures, Paolo Veronese, who had decorated the ceilings and walls with sumptuous, illusionistic imagery.  Now an iconic landmark, Venice’s first and most important Baroque monument is Santa Maria della Salute, designed in 1630 by a young architect Baldessare Longhena as a votive offering during the city’s last plague pandemic.

The same architect also created one of the most splendid of all Venetian palaces, Ca’ Rezzonico, which shows off the best in eighteenth-century art and furnishings, as well as the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, where the superlative paintings of Giambattista Tiepolo may also be admired. It was in the Dorsoduro area that the irrepressible Peggy Guggenheim chose to settle after the war, making her home in the “Unfinished Palace” where she lived among her extraordinary collection of stellar twentieth-century masterpieces.

This seminar presents Venice’s loveliest and most surprising district, setting some of the very best in Venetian art and architecture in Context.

Dorsoduro

Very informative, at a pace that kept it very interesting. Will be going to Venice next month, staying in Dorsoduro. Even with my reading up on the area I know that with this lecture I’ll be able to get so much more out of my stay. Have been to Venice before, but there’s always more to deeply explore.
