The Vatican Museums are a treasure chest of the Pope's personal collections – absolute masterpieces from antiquity to the present day, with the lesser-known collection of Modern art that includes works of Matisse, Dalì, Chagall and more. For many visitors to the Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel is the first thing that comes to mind.
Our conversation will closely examine highlight components of this majestic venue – such as the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms, but will also provide an up-close look at many of the museums' best features – normally too crowded to linger in front of. Together we will enjoy a grand tour of the collection's iconic masterpieces, going behind the ropes to take a view of these exquisite architectural features, paintings, and sculptures.
Beginning from the ancient masterpieces such as the Belvedere Apollo and the statue of Augustus and Laocoon, our seminar pauses to consider each work's delicate craftsmanship and painstaking conservation. We will examine the great paintings and tapestries designed by Raphael, the Frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, and move into the apartment of Julius II – who was better known as Raphael Stanze.
Led by an expert on Ancient Roman Topography, as well as History and Conservation of the Artistic Heritage, Livia Galante, this Conversation will focus on the Vatican Museums. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased comprehension of the history of the place as well as have suggestions of the absolutes “must-see” of these collections.
If you're ready to explore further, we invite you to join our in-person Private Tours of Rome and Virtual Tours of Italy.

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Roma Tre. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. As a native Roman, Livia is very enthusiastic in sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

Very informative

I have been to the Vatican Museums on several occasions and with several tour directors. They were all good and I learned something each time but this seminar was so well organized and informative I wish I had had the wonderful overview Ms Galante provided today! Really well done 👍

Super-helpful seminar for visiting Vatican City

In her usual extremely well-organized and well-presented style, Livia Galante made a visit to Vatican City not only come alive but made it manageable. By selecting ten sites within VC, displaying them on maps, and then taking us on a tour from one to the next showing some highlights, she created a vision of what visiting these sites would be like. Instead of picking ten works of art, she selected ten sites, so that when/if we go, we can wander each one without being predestined to go see an exact work of art in each place. Great seminar! And great graphics and slides.

Reminded me why I enjoy visiting these museums.

This was a terrific tour. I have been to the Vatican many times, and whether I am there in person or attending a tour like this, I am reminded of why the collections are so spectacular. Dr. Galante proceeds at a lovely pace and hit so many of the highlights, including my favorite, all the map tapestries. It makes me smile every time I think of walking down that long corridor and looking at the gorgeous and oh so colorful map tapestries. Absolutely worth doing whether you’ve been there or not.

Vatican without the crowds

It was wonderful to see and learn about the art in the Vatican on line. I visited the Museum in person a couple of years ago and nearly had a panic attack from the crowds. Also missed many of the highlights, so this was great
