Join art historian Sarah Bond on a visit to ten renowned museums across the US, from major institutions like the Metropolitan in New York and The Art Institute of Chicago to smaller collections such as the Des Moines Art Center and the Joslyn Museum in Omaha.

Our seminar will explore one prominent work from each of the museums, from Turner, to Grant Wood, to Rothko. Chosen works are significant either for their exceptional quality, iconic status in the popular culture, or importance in the history of art. Together we’ll study each work, analyzing its artistic qualities and reflecting on its significance. We’ll look at relationships between the pieces and bring in other works for comparison. Though not all the works are by American artists, each resonates with aspects of America and speaks to the complex and multi-faceted character of the country.

Led by an expert in art history, Dr. Sarah Bond, this interactive seminar will transport viewers to ten of the finest works of art found across the United States. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an art historical reading of a carefully curated collection of paintings.

Very enjoyable

This is a wonderful selection of some of American's best art work. Even though most of the paintings she portrayed are well known, Dr. Bond added some very interesting pieces of information about both the artists and the paintings themselves. Dr. Bond has a very calm and pleasant style. I enjoyed it very much and was inspired to dig deeper into some of the artists, like Grant Wood, Ammi Phillips and Amy Sherald..

A very good first experience with Context

Dr. Bond's knowledge is broad and deep. She also delivers it effortlessly. I found that I was engaged with paintings that are outside of my usual preferences because of the interest she elicited in me. She described the context of each work as well as her analysis of its structure in ways I would not have perceived by myself. In addition, I found what I describe as her "conversational" presentation method one that allowed me to relax and really listen.

Not only does Dr bond apply a knowledgeable historical and biographical background to each painting, but she often includes literary connections—stories, poems, and letters to enrich the experience with the painting, a beautiful blending of verbal and visual art.
