It's well known that Hitler found an alliance - albeit a rocky one - with Benito Mussolini. But what's often less widely-understood is the prevalence of overtly National Socialistic or Nazi-adjacent movements in other European countries during the 1930s and 40s. In this Conversation, we'll discuss the Austrian Nazi Party under Theodor Habicht; the Swiss Nazi leader Wilhelm Gustloff (assassinated by a Croatian Jew named David Frankfurter in 1936); the French Popular Party under Jacques Doriot; Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists; the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands under Anton Mussert; and more, including of course Vidkun Quisling's National Union in Norway.

Led by an expert on the history of the Third Reich, Dr. Finn Ballard, this Conversation will illuminate the tales of Fascist and National Socialist movements beyond Germany and Italy. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how Nazism was a much more widespread phenomenon that it is generally believed to have been.

Finn grew up in Northern Ireland before moving to England to study and later teach in the department of Film and Literature at the University of Warwick. He completed his doctoral study on German folklore and popular cinema in 2012, and has published extensively in the fields of Film Studies and Gender Studies. Since 2008, he has been living and guiding in Berlin. He now works as a historical advisor for television and film productions set in Berlin, particularly during the Weimar era or Third Reich. He is a journalist for the 'Siegessauele', Europe's foremost Queer magazine, and organises events at Berlin's English-language bookstore 'Another Country'.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

Very interesting and informative

This is another very informative lecture from Dr. Ballard. He clearly explains what was going on in other countries at the time of the rise of Nazism. I learned so much as I do from all of his lectures.

this seminar was really shocking! to hear about the atrocities that happened all over Europe and in Croatia/Yugoslavia and eastern Europe - awful! though I was a history major in University, this part of "history" was certainly left out! Finn Ballard is a most interesting /knowledgable teacher!

Fabulous, as usual. There's is nothing Dr Ballard can't make interesting.
