One of the best things about London is the variety of different architectural styles which makes it a visually stimulating city to explore. Two great disasters have ensured this architectural diversity – the Great Fire of London of 1666 and, during World War II, the Blitz of 1940-41 both of which destroyed large swathes of London and allowed for new architecture to be built in place of the old.

On this live virtual walking tour, we will examine architectural examples from many different periods, from the medieval with a 13th-century nunnery, to the early modern with a 16th-century church which we can contrast to the many post-fire churches designed by Sir Christopher Wren. In the 1600s these church spires would have stood high above the London skyline reflecting the power of the church, but today we will see how they are dwarfed by the skyscrapers representing the new power of big business, and probably the most famous of these is the Girkin, by Sir Norman Foster, who along with Richard Rogers, defines 21st-century London architecture as Wren defined the 17th century.

Led by Art Historian and Blue Badge Guide Sarah Ciacci, this virtual tour will introduce you to the different architectural styles in London, linking them to their historical and social contexts. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of architectural design and the historical development of London.

This virtual tour is part of an extended series in London, led by Sarah Ciacci. Each virtual tour can be joined independently and in any order. For more information, please click here.
