When thinking of the 17th Dutch masters, the quintessential secular themes dominating the art market of that day come to mind. However, even in a protestant country that defied the decoration of churches, many artists immersed themselves in the narrative landscapes of the period’s most popular biblical fables.

Being a leader in the field, Sabry Amroussi has been selected to compose a list of more than 200 artworks that will feature in the newest Dutch translation of the Holy Bible – on shelves in October 2021.

This is a high-honor assignment and, during this seminar, participants will enjoy the ultimate sneak peek. This interactive seminar will examine a selection of the most magistral works from this period, featuring biblical pictures by the likes of Rembrandt, Rubens, van Honthorst, Brueghel, and many others.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

Art and Religious Experience in the l7th-century Netherlands

An extraordinary seminar, based on paintings chosen by Mr. Amroussi for a new Dutch edition of the Bible. We participants received the benefits of his close study of the paintings and his fresh selections. Though I've taken numerous seminars and tours with him on l7th century art in the Netherlands, there were many artists and paintings new to me that arrestingly posed complex relations, between the secular and the religious, the Catholic and the Protestant, and the national and international. Great work, Sabry!

Sabry never disappoints. I was not sure that I would care for the subject matter, but the art works overcame any hesitancy I felt.

I was not certain that I would enjoy this seminar but because Sabry Amroussi was presenting it, I signed up and am very glad that I did. As usual, Sabry treated us to 90 minutes of an entertaining and informative discussion, coupled with wonderful images of works of art. It was a gem of a talk.
