The cultural impact that the Beatles had in the sixties on popular music and their development from a simple rock and roll band to the multi-million selling quartet that changed the Western world's perception of modern music is quite something. This conversation will trace the story behind Liverpool’s most famous band, The Beatles, including a discussion of the social influence the group also had at the time including such aspects as Beatlemania. We’ll learn about their first meetings, their world tours, and eventual split. This is a fitting conversation for anyone with an interest in one of the world’s most iconic musical groups or who may simply enjoy tapping their foot to ‘Yellow Submarine’.
Led by an expert in rock music, Richard Bowen, this interactive seminar will focus on the cultural influence that the Beatles had on popular music in the 1960s, and will analyze how they changed from being a simple rock and roll band from Liverpool to become, perhaps, one of the most innovative artists of the second half of the twentieth century. Time will be spent discussing their recording history and experimentation with sounds in conjunction with their wider cultural and commercial achievements including such phenomena as Beatlemania. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the impact that this unique group had on Western music and society.

Very comprehensive presentation of the early days and rise of the Beatles, so much information, but it was well organized, good slides, and it was both factual and editorial, which I appreciated. So lots of data but also what people in and out of the recording business thought about them. Was light, moved along and informative.

Good overview of the Beatles but would have wanted to go into more depth, perhaps iii a series

Richard is clearly a talented social historian and his enthusiasm for the subject was very infectious. His knowledge is very extensive and he covered a huge amount of material in the time. The cost was that this was very much an overview, and I would have liked to hear him into more depth into each of the sections, which could clearly merit a 90 minute session of their own.

Bowen is extremely knowledgeable about his subject and shares extensive information with his viewers. HOWEVER, he manner of speaking is really challenging and detracts from his presentation. He speaks very rapidly and lowers his voice considerably and constantly when speaking parts of his sentences so that those phrases tend to get lost. He truly needs to be made aware of this. It made sticking with the program a real challenge.
