Soak up the splendor of Imperial Russia by looking at breathtaking interiors of one of the most beautiful palaces of the country. Together, we will visit the majestic Catherine Palace, just 18 miles outside of St. Petersburg in Russia. We’ll learn about the world-famous Amber Room and virtually take a stroll in the lovely Catherine Park. We will attempt to feel the way that the Russian Royal Family once did in one of the most stunning Summer Palaces of the Russian Empire. After the conversation, we will be able to identify the key parts of the palace and the key protagonists who played a role in palatial life.
We will start with the foundation of the Catherine Palace and with the origins of the name of the place itself: Tsarskoye Selo / Tsar’s Village, Pushkin. Then, we will explore the most iconic rooms including the Amber Room. Amber Room will be the highlight of this conversation. We will learn about the most important details of this room as well as its history. We will discuss the main stages of the redesign and rebuild by various Emperors over the years, we’ll talk about what happened to the Palace after the Russian revolution as well as how it suffered during WWII. The palace has more recently been restored in the last 10 years, with some new interiors opening for the first time. We will view these together, before virtually walking in the lovely Catherine Garden to look at other exquisite buildings of the complex.
Led by a Saint Petersburg based historian Vadim Malinovskiy this conversation will offer participants an in-depth study of the history behind each room, for a deeper understanding of what the Summer Palace really is. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a more nuanced knowledge of this intriguing topic.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

Wonderful as always!

I have done a number of tours with Vadim, and they are always engaging, beautiful, and full of historical information. This one was no exception. I particularly like how he takes music breaks, which have the effect of making you feel more like you’re actually at the venue. I would highly recommend anything he leads.

I love Vadim's talks. I learn so much history and I am a big lover of all things historical about Russia. The tragedy of the Catherine Palace's destruction by the Nazis and it rise from the "Ashes" is a wonderful story.
