What is it about Paris that has kept Americans dreaming for over a century? Is it the majestic tree-lined Boulevard Saint Germain or the seedy cafes in Pigalle, the long walks along the Seine, or the illicit parties in the city’s underbelly? In this four-part series that spans history, literature, and philosophy, author, musician, and Sorbonne professor Samuél Lopez-Barrantes will guide you through the lives and imaginations of four of the most important artists to live and write in the City of Lights. Each session will be devoted to one book and one author,  from Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, James Baldwin, to Gertrude Stein. Participants are invited to read the works before attending the seminar or are welcome to use the session as a precursor to later reading.
In this session, we will read and discuss Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. We will discuss the author’s life as a young artist during the Roaring Twenties, comparing the artistic expression of the 1920s to the 2020s.
Led by an expert on history and literature, Professor Samuél Lopez-Barrantes, this interactive seminar will discuss four 20th century American masterpieces that were written in and about the City of Light. Designed to inform curiosity as well as educate, participants will come away with a deeper appreciation for the selected works as well as for a better understanding as to why Paris has continually attracted American artists well into the 21st century.
This conversation is part of a four-part series on literature connected to Paris with Samuél Lopez-Barrantes. Each session is designed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of a four-week series.

Samuél is a writer and musician who has lived in Paris since 2008. He holds an M.A. in European Society from University College London and an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Samuél teaches creative writing at the Sorbonne and is also in an American folk-rock trio, Slim & The Beast, which has toured extensively throughout Europe and has been featured numerous times in Rolling Stone France.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Excellent and informative discussion

Well paced and well presented lecture containing interesting and informative information about Hemingway, Paris and "The Moveable Feast." The readings from the text illustrating Hemingway's style were enlightening, especially for those who do not take courses in American literature. The photos and walking maps of the Paris neighborhood gave a real sense of where it all happened.

Like all great teachers, Samuel speaks from the heart and from experience. He is passionate about his subject, knows it intimately, and is uniquely qualified because he too is a creative spirit. He rocks. I can't wait to attend one of his lectures again.

A look at Ernest Hemingway’s style

Ernest Hemingway is a complicated person, like most people. Understanding his limitations, psychological and emotional, increases our insights into his characters and style, lending support to the assertion that perhaps his importance at this point in time is more historical, in that he was influenced by his affiliation with literary personalities of a given era, rather than being literary per se, or authoring works of intrinsically superior merit.

Great sense of a place and time

Samuél's use of photos, maps, and text from "Moveable Feast" blended together for an enjoyable and educational discussion on both Paris as a time and place, as well as the literary qualities of the book. Highly recommend the book discussion for those that enjoy both travel and literature.

A short walk in Paris filled with Hemingway!

Samuel always does a brilliant seminar - I loved the overlays of text on the slides as well as an actual map to show us where we were. - enrolled in the next two... for more Paris...
