Well paced and well presented lecture containing interesting and informative information about Hemingway, Paris and "The Moveable Feast." The readings from the text illustrating Hemingway's style were enlightening, especially for those who do not take courses in American literature. The photos and walking maps of the Paris neighborhood gave a real sense of where it all happened.
Like all great teachers, Samuel speaks from the heart and from experience. He is passionate about his subject, knows it intimately, and is uniquely qualified because he too is a creative spirit. He rocks. I can't wait to attend one of his lectures again.
Ernest Hemingway is a complicated person, like most people. Understanding his limitations, psychological and emotional, increases our insights into his characters and style, lending support to the assertion that perhaps his importance at this point in time is more historical, in that he was influenced by his affiliation with literary personalities of a given era, rather than being literary per se, or authoring works of intrinsically superior merit.
Samuél's use of photos, maps, and text from "Moveable Feast" blended together for an enjoyable and educational discussion on both Paris as a time and place, as well as the literary qualities of the book. Highly recommend the book discussion for those that enjoy both travel and literature.
Samuel always does a brilliant seminar - I loved the overlays of text on the slides as well as an actual map to show us where we were. - enrolled in the next two... for more Paris...
