In 2009, following Saint Laurent’s death the year before, Christie’s auctioned off a significant number of works from his private collection, raising a record $484 million, the most valuable private collection ever sold at auction. This seminar will discuss the amazing contents of that auction, and the individual masterpieces present.

The 800 lots offered at auction spanned everything from Antiquity to Modern Art, previously housed in the many homes of Yves Saint Laurent’s partner, Pierre Bergé. This seminar will discuss the amazing interiors, and most importantly, the artworks, furniture, and objects that formed, in the words of Christie's catalog, “the refined taste and voraciously curious mind of the collector behind them.”

Led by an expert on art history painting, Sabry Amroussi, this interactive seminar will explore the marvelous private art collection once belonging to fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the extensive collection and the distinctive residences in which it was displayed.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

YSL massive art collection explained

Sabry has a way of making art history come alive. He is just as wonderful, and expert, on his walking tours. I came away with an understanding and appreciation for the YSL collection and how important those kind of collectors are to art world and preserving art.

Another greatly instructive and fun “Conversation” with Sambry

Great synthesis of YSL love of art, life and Pierre with great historical information peppered in for completeness. Not the main course but a great desert

Art Collection of a Fascinating Fashion Icon

I took this talk not knowing anything about YSL's penchant for art and art collecting, but I always enjoy Sabry's talks and I thought I'd give this a try. I am so happy I did. I was riveted to the story of Saint Laurent and his obsessive hunt for high caliber, "just right" art pieces to fit his tastes and lifestyle. It was fascinating to see YSL's fashions in dialogue with the pieces he lived with. And of course, Sabry's enthusiasm for the subject is always the cherry on top of the conversation. I highly recommend this one.
