Our conversation tells the story of one of the world's most iconic series of paintings – Van Gogh's seven Sunflowers, painted during his life in Provence, France. Together we will explore the subsequent legacy of the seven pictures, and their influence on modern art. Together we will follow the travels and (mis)adventures of these iconic works as we virtually travel the world following these masterpieces. Through the many Sunflowers, participants will gain fresh insights into Van Gogh's life and his path to fame.

Based on original research, this talk is packed with discoveries throwing new light on the legendary artist. Sabry Amroussi has extensively worked for and with the van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. He brings to this conversation an insider's view of these seven paintings that are often shrouded in clouds of mythologization.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Another informative and engrossing presentation by Sabry Amroussi. I always learn so much from the knowledge and insights he shares. The high resolution images he uses really enhance his lecture.

I Didn’t Know That!

I had never heard there were four versions of Sunflowers. I knew there were three bedroom paintings but did not know about the sunflower repetitions. Sabry shared a lovely, engaging, and quite educational discussion on Van Gogh’s life (including the proper pronunciation of his name!) and several of his best known works. I highly recommend this talk.

Elegant and brilliant presentation of Van Gogh's sunflower paintings

I have heard Mr. Amroussi before on Van Gogh and on the Sunflower paintings, but his material here was fresh and important. He was exacting in spelling out painters who influenced Van Gogh and especially his relations with Theo, his brother, and Paul Gaugin, his fellow-painter. His insights into particular paintings were exceptional - and may I admit Mr. Amroussi is always outstanding - and I finished the lecture so admiring of his polished, engaging and thoroughly convincing lecture. So glad you did this, Sabry.

Fantastic seminar!

Sabre’s seminars are always great and this one was so full of information. I learned many new things about Van Gogh and about the many versions of The Sunflowers. I would highly recommend this lecture to anyone who wants to learn more than what is usually taught about Van Gogh. Thanks for a fantastic seminar!

Lisa Dimberg Van Gogh's Famous Sunflowers Review

I absolutely loved this lecture! It was filled with details about painters/paintings that influenced Van Gogh's Sunflower paintings and his painting techniques, the background and fate of the various Sunflower paintings, facts about Vincent, Theo and Gauguin that I did not previously know etc. I learned so much in 90 minutes!
