In the fall of 1888, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin lived together in the village of Arles in the south of France. This conversation will explore the importance of the 63 days these two artists spent together.

This 63 day period in the 'yellow house' proved to be decisive in the development of both artists, and also, radically, in the development of modern art. Based on the landmark exhibition of 2002 this seminar discusses one of the most important and tumultuous episodes in the history of art.

We will reconstruct these 63 days, discussing all the famous (and not so famous) episodes and works of this period in the career of these two hot-headed artists. From 'the Sunflowers' to the 'incident with the ear', Sabry will add the latest research and high definition images to give participants a thorough immersion in this notorious period.

Led by an expert on art history, Sabry Amroussi will lead participants through this short yet formative time for both artists and the development of modern art. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the works of art of van Gogh and Gauguin and their 63 days in the south of France.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

So so good

Sabry was so knowledgable, and I was busting a gut laughing at some of the amazing facts and stories he told about the relationship between Van Gogh and Gauguin. I learned so much about both artists (and as an artist myself and a fan of both their work, there was so much I didn't know), it was very informative and I'm so glad I attended.
