Join an expert to understand why the former residence of Roman Emperor Hadrian was so important and the legacy the site had on future architectural visions.

The Roman Emperor Hadrian’s country estate located in the Tiburtine Hills near Tivoli is a concept for “an ideal city”. The site represents an exceptional architectural legacy of the ancient Mediterranean world combining material traditions of Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Hadrian’s Villa inspired a renewed interest in classical architecture and influenced both the Renaissance and Baroque. Its remarkable achievement in design has continued to influence architects and designers in the modern era.

"Very interesting for someone who likes Roman history - anything Roman."

Led by our architectural expert Diane Archibald we will walk through the historic site and discuss the exemplary architectural structures, the terracing of the site, water as an integral element, and the interrelationships between the buildings, gardens, and fountains that together create an immersive landscape. A wonderful and educational introduction to Hadrian's Villa. Diana was engaging and extremely knowledgable. Having a clear overview and orientation at the beginning made the following material easy to follow and made us forget the handicap of not being able to be physically present. The photos and video explained the spaces so clearly.

Dr Archibald was very well organized, knowledgeable, and informative. We have long wanted to visit this site but haven’t been able to do so for reasons of schedule. Now we feel we have some intimate knowledge of the site and of Hadrian. We still hope to go, and if so, would hope to have her as a guide. Thanks to her and to Context for this opportunity!
