In the year 1755 AD, a horrific earthquake devastated the city of Lisbon and destroyed many of its historic buildings and churches–which had been pillars of the community for centuries. During this conversation, a local historian will virtually guide us through four of the churches which have survived the tests of time.
Together participants will learn about these churches’ unique architecture, the religious iconography they house, and their role in the city’s social life. You will also discover the structural renovations they have withstood and the moments of history to which they have borne witness. Lisbon’s four primary churches each reveal unique context clues about daily life for its 18th-century citizens, prior to the earthquake’s destruction.
Led by Estela Mendes, an expert in Portuguese history, participants will discover four must-see churches of Lisbon.  Eager to explore Lisbon in person? Join one of our upcoming Private Tours.
