Often referred to as an artist colony, few districts in Paris are as intrinsically linked to the city’s artistic heritage as Montmartre. Once a working-class village on the outskirts of the city, from the 1870s through the 1920s it became a petri dish for modern art, attracting the most avant-garde artists of the times. In this Context Conversation, we trace this evolution through the leading artists who lived and worked in the area.

Our virtual time travel will start by exploring how some late 19th-century artists first came to Montmartre. Using specific artists as our guides, including Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and Dali, we will journey forward through the Belle Epoque and into the 20th century as we stop into their art studios, homes and favorite haunts.

This interactive seminar is led by writer and Montmartre expert Lily Heise, a native of Canada who has lived around the corner from Picasso’s former art studio for 17 years. It is designed to inform curiosity as well as inspire future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of the history of Montmartre and its influences on Impressionisms and modern art.

Originally from Canada, Lily Heise is a freelance travel writer who has been living in Paris since 2000. She holds a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Guelph and has extensive experience in tourism and culture having worked for several French universities, museums, cultural sites and previously in the office of Context Travel. Her writing has been featured on the Huffington Post, Business Insider, CondeNastTraveler.com, Frommer's print guides and online, DK Eyewitness, Fodor's and others.
