Description
Join us for a trip to the beautiful city of Vicenza, halfway between Venice and Verona. Together we will contextualize the artistic masterpieces of Bellini, Veronese, and Tiepolo, as well as the celebrated architecture of Andrea Palladio.
Our journey through the elegant and prosperous city of Vicenza will expose the ecclesiastical paintings by stellar Venetian artists including Bellini and Veronese, as well as the superb frescoes in Villa Valmarana by Giambattista Tiepolo.
Much quirkier and truly intriguing, are the frescoes in the Villa’s annex by his son, the extraordinary and but less well-known Giandomenico. And of course, we must take a closer look at the exquisite architectural stylings of Andrea Palladio, whose career was launched in Vicenza, thanks to a foresightful patron who spotted genius in the young stonemason.
Palladio’s Vicentine designs transformed the city and include:
- the renovation of the medieval civic center -- now called the Basilica Palladiana
- the Palazzo Chiericati, now home to the city’s civic museums
- the famous and influential Villa Rotunda
- the Teatro Olimpico, a theatre complete with stage scenery that is still used for performances today.
