Johannes Vermeer, a celebrated painter of the Dutch Golden Age painted around 35 paintings we know of in his lifetime. From the Girl with a Pearl Earring to the Milkmaid, it’s hard to pick a favorite. This conversation will look at the life and a carefully curated selection of his works to understand more about this renowned artist.
For such an enigmatic painter with a very small oeuvre, the painter from Delft has attracted loads of attention, from scholars and art lovers alike. Over the last 150 years, there has been a wealth of tions, documentaries, lectures, novels, and movies that all attempt to shed light on the master and his work. Through this Context Conversation, art historian and expert Alette will step into Vermeer’s times and take the viewers through Vermeer’s works. We’ll learn about the historical context of his time and discuss the meaning of various details in his paintings. Are we looking at a calm scene? Or is there more behind what meets the eye?
Led by an expert on Art History, Alette Fleischer, this interactive seminar will focus on Vermeer and his world and his work. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about Vermeer and desire to examine your favorite Vermeer.

This conversation is the first in a two-part series. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.

Lovely presentation

This first presentation on Vermeer, one of my favorite artist, was just what I wanted. It had just the right amount of information delivered in a relaxing style. I felt like I had had a lovely stroll through Vermeer's life. Perhaps when a lecturer has two presentations and does not have to put everything into one 60 minute seminar the delivery can be less fully packed. It was a nice change even though I do understand and appreciate the seminars loaded with information.

Amazing Vermeer Seminar

I have always admired Vermeer's paintings. Learning about the allegories behind the 4 paintings Alette presented to us was fascinating. She is an excellent presenter and very knowledgeable about her topic. I look forward to Volume 2.
