Our spotlight on Frida Kahlo examines the life and legacy of one of the 20th century's most popular female artists. Through a comprehensive, but accessible, introduction to the oeuvre of the artist, we will explore Kahlo’s contributions to the canon of art history. While scrutinizing autobiographical information, we will better understand her sources of artistic inspiration and will enjoy the in-depth analysis of her most iconic self-portraits.

Kahlo lived to be 47 years old and from her approximately 150 works, 65 of these were self-portraits. In this seminar, we will analyze the importance of these works in their own light and their greater influence on feminist art history. By going beyond mere autobiographical readings of her works, we will understand the subtle symbolic complexities of her art and why these compositions are still relevant today for the viewers.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and published author, Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik, this interactive seminar will explore the contribution of this great artist to the history of art. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation and novel interpretations of the most iconic works by Frida Kahlo and how these have forever changed depictions of femininity in art.

Illuminating Frida Kahlo

Even though I thought I knew quite a bit about Frida Kahlo and have seen her paintings in various locations, I found that Timea took me to a deeper understanding of both the artist and her art. Kahlo's symbolism, traditional & family references, and her complicated relationship with Diego Rivera and other lovers--all came together in this symposium in a structured yet informal presentation. The embedded audio and video clips of Kahlo added a lot. I especially appreciated Timea's final section on what we can learn about ourselves and others from Kahlo's art. She also was thorough and thoughtful by leaving time for questions and in providing detailed responses. Highly recommended!

Fascinating and well done presentation

I learned so much about Frida Kahlo and Timea really put her work, especially her self-portraiture, in context (no pun intended). The only reason I gave only 4 stars is that the audio was spotty for some reason, although that may have been on my end
