Our spotlight on Edgar Degas (1834-1917) examines the life and legacy of one of the most innovative and original artists of the nineteenth century. Through a comprehensive but accessible introduction to the oeuvre of the artist, we will explore Degas’ role and contribution to modern art history. While analyzing autobiographical information to better grasp the inspiration sources of this complex artist, we will proceed to an in-depth analysis of his most iconic works capturing the essence of the Parisian life of his time.

During our time together we will analyze Degas’ most important series of works depicting dancers and the backstage life at the Opera, café-life, and the racecourses, evaluating their importance and influence in art history. An insatiable technical innovator, Degas brought a new expressive force and richness of color to the medium of pastel which will be analyzed in-depth during this seminar. We will also pay close attention to his innovations in photography and his introduction of new subjects in materials in sculpture.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and published author, Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik, this interactive seminar will explore the contribution of this great artist to the history of art. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation and novel interpretations of the most iconic works by Edgar Degas and how these have influenced the course of art.

Spotlight on Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik

Timea not only brought Degas to life, she brought him to life in the time in which he lived. Further, by including important and interesting details about the subjects of, and in, the paintings, she brought those being painted to life. The addition of actual film footage of the artist, himself, was a brilliant cap to a wonderful talk.
