Take the two best and most famous portrait painters from the Golden Age, and compare them; that is exactly what this seminar will do. Not a match, but a meaningful rendezvous between two masters who have never met each other, but changed the course of portraiture forever.

Frans Hals and Rembrandt van Rijn were the two superstars of the Golden Age when it came to portraiture; like true Andy Warhols of their age, they portrayed the rich and famous, art connaisseurs and businessmen alike. Although their style is sometimes reminiscent of each other, there are differences. We’ll look closely at a carefully curated selection of their masterpieces as we pick apart these iconic artists.

An expert in Dutch Golden Age painting, Sabry Amroussi, will take you past all the relevant masterpieces of the virtuoso artists; from the 'Portrait of Jan Six' to 'the Laughing Cavalier'. We’ll meet these often familiar faces and see them in a different light. Although always rooting for Rembrandt, Sabry will take a broad approach and paint a lively portrait of these 'rivals' with humor and gusto.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.
