Have you ever considered buying some original art? Perhaps you already own a couple of pieces, but want to take it further, maybe even build your own art collection? For many people, the art world can be a rather intimidating place, and when it comes to purchasing paintings or sculptures, they just don’t know where to begin.
This seminar, presented by an ex-auctioneer and enthusiastic art collector, will examine the various ways that we can buy art today, revealing the pros and cons of each. From developing your own taste to understanding the (sometimes wildly) varying values placed on different works of art, from dealing with art world professionals to knowing where and when to buy the best pieces, it will help to shine a light on the often shadowy and confusing world of collecting. Although it is the multi-million-dollar auctions that regularly grab the headlines, even those with a more modest budget can enjoy art collecting and perhaps even pick up a bargain or two if you know where to look!
Led by an art historian with a broad experience of the international art market who also loves to collect art, this interactive seminar will offer an in-depth look at the various ways that art is bought and sold in the twenty-first century. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an insight into the pleasures and potential pitfalls of buying and collecting art.

In addition to his work for Context Travel, Alan also writes catalog essays on Contemporary Art for a leading auctioneer. Elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2017, his first book, entitled 'Classical Caledonia', was published by Edinburgh University Press in August 2020.
