Join us as we venture off-the-beaten-track to southern Italy. We will explore the art and architecture that travelers often overlook and prove that there is more than just Pompeii to surprise and delight south of Rome!

This seminar will show you the treasures of Southern Italy, many of which are practically unknown outside Italy, even the sites and places with UNESCO World Heritage status. Designed to inspire future travels beyond Florence, Venice, and Rome, participants will come away knowing about the Greek temples at Paestum, the Byzantine mosaics in Palermo, the world's largest palace at Caserta, and the cave paintings of Matera.

Led by an expert on art history, Danielle Oteri, this interactive seminar will explore the marvels of Italy south of Rome. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the lesser-known treasures of Europe.

Danielle Oteri is an expert on Roman, medieval and Renaissance art. She was a Lecturer at the Met Cloisters for fifteen years and has been Program Director of the International Center of Medieval Art since 2008. Danielle has written about art, history, food and travel for Conde Nast Traveler, Gothamist, NPR and Roads & Kingdoms. She is the founder of Feast on History and Arthur Avenue Food Tours.

Highlights of Southern Italy

This is a well-organized journey to the top hits of Southern Italy- Caserta, Monreale, Cave of the Original Sin, and Paestum ( with a few side trips along the way ). I’ve enjoyed 20-30 different lecturers on Context, Danielle Oteri is by far the best. She’s smart, thoughtful, entertaining, and really knows how to tell a story. I recommend any seminar with Danielle.

Great mix of history, culture and insightful thoughts on travel to southern Italy. I have been researching a trip and hoping the current travel challenges allow me to go soon. One of the best of the series. Thanks so much Danielle.
