Our spotlight on Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) examines the work of one of the most important and influential post-Impressionist painters. Through a comprehensive but accessible introduction to the oeuvre of the artist, we will explore Van Gogh’s contribution to modern art history. While analyzing autobiographical information to better grasp the inspiration sources of the painter, we will proceed to an in-depth analysis of his most celebrated portraits, self-portraits, landscapes, still-lives, sunflowers, and olive trees.

After failing to become an art dealer and a pastor, Van Gogh turned to art-making. His short career spanned about a decade, and began with dark works depicting peasant laborers and still lives. During his time in Paris in he got acquainted with the work of the Impressionists, which radically changed his color palette. He fully developed the style that he is known for today in the south of France, where he had spent the last years of his life. While highly prolific in his last period, he remained commercially unsuccessful during his lifetime. In this seminar, we will examine his major his groundbreaking artistic experiments which posthumously transformed him into one of the most famous artists of all time.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and published author, Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik, this interactive seminar will explore the contribution of this great artist to art history. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding and appreciation of the most iconic works by Vincent van Gogh and how these influenced the course of modern art.

Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik is an art historian, curator, and writer based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She holds an MA in art history from Utrecht University and a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Amsterdam. For over ten years she has written, lectured, and published in the international field of modern and contemporary art. As a freelance curator, she organized several exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad. Since 2016, she is serving as a member of the International Association of Art Critics, AICA, The Netherlands.
