Our spotlight on Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) examines the life and legacy of one of the most inventive artists of the twentieth century. Through a comprehensive but accessible introduction to her oeuvre, we will explore Bourgeois’ role and contribution to modern and contemporary art history. While analyzing autobiographical information better to grasp the inspiration sources of this complex artist, we will proceed to an in-depth analysis of his most iconic works, such as the giant spiders and “cell” installations.

A Paris native whose parents managed a tapestry repair company, she spent her formative years working alongside them in the factory, filling in the gaps in the patterns that were displayed on the tapestries. Although she majored in geometry and mathematics at the Sorbonne, she finally went back to her first love, art, and during the course of her lengthy and diverse career, she worked in printing, painting, and large-scale sculpture. Although she wasn't part of any one particular art movement, she showed among the abstract expressionists and had affinities with Surrealist and feminist art, addressing topics such as sexuality, the unconscious, and loneliness in her work. In this seminar, we will look at the complex and versatile oeuvre of Bourgeois and the many changes that occurred throughout her eight-decade-long career, examining how the creation of art was, for her, a tool for processing one's inner emotionality and psychological landscape.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and published author, Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik, this interactive seminar will explore the contribution of this great artist to modern and contemporary art history. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation and understanding of the most iconic works by Louise Bourgeois.
