Francisco de Goya, the Spanish artistic powerhouse, was most of the influential and well-known painters and print-makers of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Having come to artistic maturity during the age of the Enlightenment, is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the Moderns. Social commentary comes to life in his engravings, paintings, and drawings of contemporary historical upheavals, and his portraits continue to be renowned today, as they were centuries past, as some of the greatest of any artist.

In this talk, Sabry Amroussi offers a detailed visual and intellectual analysis of Goya masterpieces, his iconic themes and styles, and will delve into his personal history and entry into the art world as well, to best understand Goya the artist and the man. Viewers will learn about some of his most incredibly pieces, including Witches in the Air, The Third of May and The Dream of Reason, as well as examples of his early work and portraiture such as The Duchess of Alba, The Nude Maja and The Clothed Maja.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.
