Our conversation will investigate the architectural environment left by several Italian architects who contributed to the making of the cosmopolitan and ‘Levantine’ Istanbul between the second half of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. Through the works of architects such as the Fossati brothers, Raimondo D’Aronco, Giulio Mongeri, Edoardo De Nari, and many others, this seminar will outline the achievements of the Italians in the Ottoman society – which built a strong cultural bridge between the Western and European lifestyles of that era.
During this period of great reforms that occurred in the Ottoman Empire after the 1830s, many were led by the foreigners who contributed to the urban and architectural development of modern Istanbul. Finding a fertile background and common roots (and represented very well by the Latin community already existing in the Ottoman Empire since the period of the Genoese colonies) Italian architects, craftsmen, and decorators moved to the court of the last Sultans or in Kemalist Turkey in search of fortune and business, by proposing their projects and design for the ‘City of Desire’ – Constantinople.
Led by an expert on Ottoman Architecture, and Orient and Genoese Heritage in Galata and Pera, this interactive discussion will present the important role played by several Italian architects who enriched the city of Istanbul through their masterpieces in the Late Ottoman Empire and during the first decades of the modern Turkish Republic. Crafted to give precise details and to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a deeper knowledge of architectural masters in one of the most fascinating and charming cities of the world.
To experience the splendor of Istanbul's architecture in person, we invite you to explore our Private Tours and Context Journey to Istanbul in 2022.

Architectural Gems of ‘Levantine’ Istanbul

This was an excellent lecture not covering only the architectural highlights of Italian architects of Levantine Istanbul but also a brief history of the time, and how it influenced the cultural setup.
Even though I was born in Istanbul and lived my first 18 years there, I have not seen most of the locations that this lecture explained so when my next trip I definitely would choose Dr. Orlandi as my guide and make sure to visit these venues. What an excellent Lecture! Thank You.
