Joseph Brodsky, the recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature, was asked to leave the Soviet Union because his views differed so deeply from the state’s official ideology. He went on to teach at Cambridge, Yale, and Columbia; his creative legacy has been recognized as a literary treasure of the twentieth century.

This seminar explores the poetic and essayistic legacy of Joseph Brodsky in the context of his unique life. Born and raised in the Soviet Union, he remained utterly immune to its ideology and gave voice to millions of people who did not want to participate in the Soviet experiment. The product and the embodiment of the Russian literary tradition, he found his home in the United States. A man who cared for politics so little that he famously did not recognize the Soviet General Secretary on a parade banner, Brodsky ended up contributing to the monumental historical shifts of the late twentieth century.

Led by an expert on Russian Literature, Nina Wieda, this Conversation will elucidate Brodsky’s poetics legacy and its place in the history of the 20th century. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased passion for Russian literature and a desire to read more of it.

This seminar is part of an extended series, designed to be enjoyed independently or as a collective. We invite you to explore:
