The Balkans Peninsula is home to nine countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia. While many know of the Balkans because of the late-twentieth-century wars on the peninsula, this interactive seminar will illuminate the region in a different light: as a place of fascinating history and vibrant culture.

In this conversation, we will discuss the similarities and differences between the nine countries, their cultural output, and their complex interwoven histories. The Balkans boast a unique musical tradition that brings together Western and Ottoman influences, a cuisine that has been truly fusion in nature even before it became fashionable, and historical monuments that tell the stories of many centuries ago.

Led by an expert on the Balkans, Nina Wieda, his interactive seminar will introduce its participants to this unique culture's heritage. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation for the region and a desire to see more of it.

This conversation is part of a multi-part series on Eurasian Culture with Nina Wieda. Each session is designed to be enjoyed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of the extended series.

A Truly Wonderful Lecture

Dr. Wieda managed to present more information than seemed possible about the ten, count 'em ten, countries in the Balkans. We learned about the history, cultures, food and sites across the area along with the things to see in each country. Don't miss this one.

Nina has a way to convey you to a ration intellectually and emotionally

Should be 2 or 3 separate presentations

Dr. Nina Wieda’s seminars are always excellent, and this one on the Balkans was no exception: full of content, enthusiasm, diverse and beautiful photography and music, and more. But, I think the concept of covering 10 different, interesting and historic countries in one program short-changed them all, with tidbits of information and very few visuals of each one. Better to divide the presentation into 2 or even 3 seminars, with more in-depth attention of each country, in my opinion.
