The Central Asian country of Turkmenistan is one of the world's most mysterious places. In Turkmenistan, you can find some incredibly impressive monuments from Central Asia's golden age and one of the most fascinating forms of modern government and culture. For example, the months of the year have been renamed after members of a former president's family, and one of the country's most prominent monuments is modeled in the image of a book.

Led by an expert on the post-Soviet space, Nina Wieda, this course illuminates Turkmenistan's rich history and fascinating present. Designed to inspire curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased fascination for Turkmenistan and an understanding of its unique cultural and political landscape.

Nina Wieda is a native of the Caucasus living in Chicago, USA. She holds a Ph.D. in Slavic from Northwestern University and an MA in Nationalism Studies from Central European University. Nina also has experience in journalism, advertising, and consumer research – her writing has been published in three languages. She wrote her Master's thesis about the Northern Caucasus region. Dr. Wieda currently teaches at Northwestern University near Chicago.

Fabulous Introduction to Turkmenistan

A fantastic presentation—I’m also signed up for Dr. Wieda's next lectures on Central Asia, and I’m now really looking forward to them! I know it’s difficult for an expert in a field to explain something to an audience with no knowledge of the area. Dr. Wieda was able to do exactly that! This seminar was a wonderful introduction to Turkmenistan, including both key historical/cultural information and a helpful orientation towards tourism. I’d strongly recommend this lecture to both those thinking about doing a “Silk Road” trip and those who’re just interested in filling in a country on the map with some essential information!

Great profile of countries unfamiliar to most of us

I have taken all of Dr Wieda's Caucasus and "stans" courses. She is exceptional. Her presentation style is terrific, one of most well spoken of any of the context presenters. Her insights are clearly based on her indepth knowledge of the cultures, the slides are terrific. Will be signing up for her courses in the future for sure.
