This year, people from across the globe will visit the long-awaited 59th Venice Biennale.  This seminar, however, offers a glimpse of noteworthy exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and other projects beyond the wonderful installations and artworks included in the Milk of Dreams curated by Cecilia Alemani in the Central Pavilion of the Giardini and Arsenale as well as the various national pavilions located in the Giardini,  Arsenale and throughout the city.  It offers excellent preparation for upcoming visits to this city during the summer and fall of 2022.

Specifically, we will visit virtually Marlene Dumas: Open Ended, a stunning thematically organized retrospective of this amazing painter's work mounted at the Pinault Foundation's Palazzo Grassi. Further, we will explore Bruce Nauman's Contrapposto Studies at the nearby Punta della Dogana (also a Pinault space).  Other shows to be viewed and discussed include works by Anselm Kiefer temporarily installed at the Doge's Palace, Louise Nevelson's sculptures at the newly renovated Procuratie Vecchie in San Marco, Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity at the Peggy Guggenheim, and the two-part retrospective of Anish Kapoor at the Accademia and Palazzo Manfrin. We will also consider Mary Weatherford's Flaying of Marsyas, a series of new paintings installed at Palazzo Grimani, and the nearby installations by Danh Vo, Isamu Noguchi, and Park Seo-Bo at the Fondazione Querini-Stampalia.

Finally, the seminar will cover exhibitions on the Island of San Giorgio. These include the Stanze del Vetro's stunning installation of works produced by Fontana Arte and  Kehinde Wiley's captivating Archaeology of Silence paintings.  We will also review the lovely On Fire show featuring works by Alberto Burri, Yves Klein, Arman, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Jannis Kounellis, and Claudio Parmiggiani – that somehow incorporate this powerful titular element.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art, Dr.Jennie Hirsh, this Conversation will provide participants with virtual visits to exhibitions and collateral events that are on view in Venice this summer. The seminar prepares visitors for experiences beyond the Biennale (Giardini and Arsenale) this year. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased awareness of what else to see while in town for the 2022 Venice Biennale.

This was my third event with Jennie Hirsh. She is always lively and engaging. In this course I especially loved the way she presented the art along with travel tips and favorite restaurants. (I wish I could have printed out the chat with her suggestions, but I couldn't make it work.)

Very interesting and enjoyable conversation

This was an insider's look at what else is going on in Venice around the traditional Biennale. She gave us a lot of great tips on very interesting exhibitions and also a lot of ticket advice and restaurant tips. This was a very useful and interesting session.
