The Venice Biennale in 1895 was the first of its kind of bi-annual contemporary art and architecture exhibitions on the world stage. During this seminar, we will learn about the relationship between contemporary art biennials and world’s fairs, along with the types of art and political agendas premiered at these shows.
Venice set the stage for large-scale contemporary art events and inspired many variants worldwide. We will examine how other exhibitions, such as Documenta in Germany and the São Paulo Bienal in Brazil, expanded the format and goals of such shows. We will also consider how the proliferation of biennials across the world has created an ever-changing landscape for showcasing new voices in contemporary art and has impacted the evolution of curating art. We will consider events in New York, New Mexico, Sydney, and Istanbul in our discussion.
Finally, our conversation will highlight a few of the fascinating buildings commissioned for these events, such as the Venezuelan Pavilion by Carlo Scarpa in Venice and the Bienal Pavilion by Oscar Niemeyer in São Paolo, acclaimed architectural spectacles aimed at drawing visitors from around the world.
Led by an expert on contemporary art, architecture, and exhibitions, Dr. Jennie Hirsh, this interactive seminar will illustrate how these temporary yet regularly held contemporary art events have facilitated an international exchange of aesthetic, political, and cultural ideas for artists, spectators, and collectors from the late nineteenth century until today.
