Join an expert in Renaissance art history to explore Venice’s famed Accademia Gallery, home to the finest collection of Venetian paintings in the world. Dr. Susan Steer will uncover the meaning of these masterpieces and their influence on the history of art.

Venetian painting was one of the primary “schools” in Italian Renaissance art, known for its expressive color palette and the lushness of paint application. Venetian artists absorbed ideas and techniques from an eclectic range of sources and influenced later generations of artists, including the Impressionists. This seminar presents highlights from the Accademia collection, focusing on the most significant artworks to Venetian and European art history. We will look at pictures by some of the major artists in Venetian painting like Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. We will also consider some figures whose fame is undeservedly more modest.

In uncovering the stories behind the pictures, the seminar will touch on historical controversies and aspects of artistic patronage. We will dive into the meanings and interpretations of the images. We will also learn about the historic Carità complex in which the collection is housed and the curators’ challenges in presenting artworks in this unique setting.

Led by an expert on Venetian Renaissance painting, Dr. Susan Steer, this interactive seminar explores Venetian painting at Venice’s Accademia Gallery, focusing on 1400-1600. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of the contexts and interpretations of key artworks in the world’s finest collection of Venetian Renaissance painting.
